My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The book opens with Lindsay stumbling into an elevator and ends with her falling in love. Little does she know that her less than graceful entry into the elevator would lead to an invitation to experience a smoking hot weekend with three incredibly handsome men whose sole focus is her pleasure. Lindsay accepts the invitation because she believes it is a joke from her best friend and will simply be a relaxing girl’s weekend in a swanky penthouse.

Erik, Connor, and Travis share an unconventional living arrangement in that they are in a relationship; all three of them together. Occasionally, they will invite a woman into their relationship but only for a weekend. However, the weekend with Lindsay leads to unexpected feelings.

While the chemistry between the four of them is palpable, Lindsay and Erik share a deeper connection. Erik fears a relationship with Lindsay will change the dynamic between him, Connor and Travis.

Illicit is a very quick (I read it in one day), steamy read so don’t expect a deep connection or a sophisticated relationship to develop between the characters. Each of the main characters has issues that are touched on but not discussed in depth or resolved.

Note: There are m/m, m/m/f, m/f/m, and m/f scenes throughout the book.

Hopeless

Hopeless (Hopeless, #1)Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Saying that one moment has the power to forever change someone’s life seems obscenely cliché but that is exactly what happened to Sky Davis one fateful day at the grocery store. The moment she and Dean Holder locked gazes set them on a path that forever changes both of their lives for the better and the worse.

Sky has simply endured every relationship she has had up to the point. She hides within herself during all romantic encounters. Holder will not tolerate Sky’s numbness when she is with him. Having never felt an emotional attachment to any of her other boyfriends, Sky fears the feelings she has with/for Holder. What Sky doesn’t realize is that her inexplicable deep feelings for Dean are easily explainable, she just doesn’t remember why.

Dean does everything in his power to avoid having to shatter Sky’s world. However, neither of them knew of the other demon lurking in the shadows and how many people it would touch before the damage was done. Once all is revealed Dean and Sky will have to figure out how and if they can move forward with a future together.

The pain that each of the main characters endures is very hard to read but the story is incredibly captivating. You can’t help but want to finish the book to see what happens and how it ends. Colleen Hoover has created characters that possess great strength and endurance. While the book doesn’t end with a happily ever after, it does end with the impression that each of the characters are stronger than they were at the beginning and that they will find happiness.

Note: This book could emotionally overwhelm some readers. Having read it, I now fully understand that while the story may be about two young adults, some may not be able to handle the content.

The Warlock King

The Warlock King (The Kings #3)The Warlock King by Heather Killough-Walden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Warlock King is book three of The Kings series, a spin-off of the Big Bad Wolf Series.

Jason Alberich, the Warlock King, is a familiar character for readers of the Big Bad Wolf and The Kings series. Earlier in the series Jason was a character that was easy to dislike. He brought a really horrible werewolf back to life and tried to take Danny away from Lucas among other despicable things. The Jason we have encountered in the more recent books has changed to someone readers can understand and even like, especially when he is with the Cage twins. Jason saw his queen in The Phantom King. Now he gets to claim her.

Chloe Septeran is not just any Akyri. She is one of the original twenty-eight who was born of the cosmos. The interesting thing about Akyri’s is that they get their nourishment by ‘feeding’ off the power of a warlock. It makes perfect sense that one of the twenty-eight would be destined to be the Warlock Queen.

As in the previous two books of the series, the process of the King claiming his Queen is rife with danger and resistance to the inevitable. The unknown danger to the Queens is front and center in this book. While we are still not sure why the Kings and Queens are being targeted we do have a clearer picture of who is behind it. It is even more imperative for the other Kings to find and claim their Queens before it’s too late.

One word of caution, it would be in your best interest to read the previous installations of both series to understand the history of the characters and how the story got to this point, if you haven’t already. All of the books of both series are heavily entwined. Not to worry, as with other H K-W books, they are great series!!! I can’t wait for the stories of the rest of the Kings since they are all creatures that are not prevalent in other paranormal romance stories I have read. Up next looks to be the Goblin King.

Edge of Dawn

Edge of Dawn (Midnight Breed, #11)Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book eleven in Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed Series picks up twenty years after the events that took place in Darker After Midnight; most notably Dragos’s release hundreds of blood addicted vampires, known as rogues, onto the unsuspecting world on what is now called First Dawn. The Breed and humans alike have struggled to bring peace back to the world now that the Breeds have been exposed.

With twenty years having passed, the younger characters we were introduced to earlier in the series are now grown up. A few of the mated couples of the Order have had children so there are several new characters introduced in this book. A new generation of the Breed is now members of the Order along with the original members.

Mira and Kellen grew up under the protection of the Order and lived through the years of wars waged after First Dawn. Just as they finally acknowledge their love for each other, a terrible accident takes Kellen from Mira. On the eight year anniversary of the accident, what really happened that night will come to light. It also exposes a conspiracy that would possibly lead to the extinction of the Breed population if not stopped.

Also, great strides and confirmation of the origin of the Breedmates are made in this installation of the series.
