After MathAfter Math by Denise Grover Swank
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Scarlett Goodwin has two goals in life; first, to not end up destitute and living in a trailer park like her mom and sister and second to be an analyst for the CIA. She is well on her way to both as a math major at Southern University until Tucker Price enters her life. While Scarlett is the picture of the ideal student, Tucker occupies the other end of the spectrum, the life of the party who is just biding his time in college until he can move on to bigger and better. How could these two individuals possibly need from each other?

Tucker is on academic probation for math and behavioral probation for his rambunctious, fool-hardy ways. The Math Department desperately wants a new software program that the university will happily pay for if Scarlett, the premier tutor, will help get Tucker back on track. They didn’t know it but but they had so much more to offer each other.

Denise Grover Swank has written a beautiful story of two very likeable characters who didn’t know they were missing anything until they found it. While it is not a fast-paced romance, it does have a nice flow that takes the readers along for the journey with the characters.

MacRieve (Immortals After Dark, #13)MacRieve by Kresley Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Uilleam MacRieve was traumatized as a boy and then again later as an adult. A man can only be expected to endure so much. The expectations are even less when the trauma he has endured has caused him to have a tenuous hold on the beast within him. He is in utter despair and ready to end his pain.

Chloe has owned her life and accomplished every goal she set for herself. Lately, however, something is starting to change. While they are small changes she has no idea why they are occurring. She tells her father and his only response is to give her a book about the Lore and say they will talk about it when he returns, which he never does. The next thing she knows, she has been kidnapped and is up for auction by the very creatures she just discovered existed.

MacRieve immediately realizes that Chloe is his mate and salvation. Fate however decides to throw him one more challenge to overcome before he can find peace. While MacRieve’s animosity towards Chloe might seem out of character for mates, it is understandable give his history with her species (yes she is more than human). He must overcome his prejudice or risk losing his mate, forever.

Kresley Cole’s story depicts the error of stereotyping. Cole does a great job of expressing MacRieve’s inner turmoil about his situation and feelings towards Chloe. This is book thirteen of the Immortals After Dark series. It makes a great addition to the series for fans but it can also stand alone for those who are new to the series.

Tear You ApartTear You Apart by Megan Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What do you do when you need what you can’t have?

Meet Elisabeth, your typical mid-forties American woman: married, two kids, full time job, a house – the usual. She doesn’t know it but she is terribly unhappy with her life. Elisabeth isn’t looking for an affair or for Will but nonetheless she ends up with both and she is changed irrevocably. Her affair with Will forces her to take a good long, hard look at her life. Once she does, she is distraught to find out that she has settled into contentment as opposed to striving for happiness. Tear You Apart is a story of a woman coming to grips with having an affair. Readers will find it easy to identify with Elisabeth and Will’s dilemma. They both acknowledge that what they are doing is wrong but seem powerless to stop.

What do you do when you find out you’re unhappy with your life? Would you be able to sacrifice potential happiness for the good of your family?

Megan Hart has written a cast of characters that are very likable in spite of their innumerous flaws that make them more human. Readers will get pulled into the story simply to find out how it ends. It’s witty, romantic, devastating, and it will tear you apart right along with the characters.
