This Time Forever (Glebe Point, #1)This Time Forever by Patricia Paris
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

On the best and worst day of his life, Blake finds out he has a son only no one knows where he is. He hires a private detective to try and find him but lead after lead turns into a dead end. When he meets Delaney he starts to feel that life isn’t completely unfair. Little does he know that his past and his present are on a collision course that will irrevocably change his future.

In an effort to protect someone you love, is it okay to deceive another? This is the predicament that is now Delaney’s life. She wanted to do what was best for Ben but ended up falling in love with his father which was not part of the plan. She only wanted to meet Blake to confirm his horribleness but things get really complicated when the private detective Blake hired unveils her secret before she has a chance to.

Patricia Paris has written a delightful cast of characters that have good times, bad times, and some real punches to the gut that will have readers holding back tears. This is a great read for those looking for a contemporary romance with a healthy dose of depth.

Those Red High Heels

Those Red High HeelsThose Red High Heels by Katherine May
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What started out as the worst day of Emma Walker’s life ended up being the catalyst for her happily ever after. If Emma hadn’t awoken to a dog with stomach issues followed by being late for work and subsequently getting fired, she probably never would have bought those to die for, killer, red heels during her retail therapy session.

Greyson Lyons is moving through life on auto-pilot; he works to take over the family business, he is even planning to marry a woman he barely likes as a person, for the greater good of the business. When a woman in red high heels gets into his car by mistake, his entire world tilts on its axis and he will never be the same.

Katherine May has created some of the best characters one could hope for. They experience love, lust, hurt, and disappointment in a very real way. She has written a quick read that still delivers on depth and emotion. There is a sort of magic behind the notion of love at first sight but with this story even the most adamant naysayers may actually start to believe it could exist.

Make You Mine

Make You Mine (Nine Circles, #2)Make You Mine by Jackie Ashenden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Nine Circles series from Jackie Ashenden. The plot picks up where the first book left off. The members of the Nine Circles are delving further into the mystery of the Lucky Seven Casino. This time Alex is front and center and we find out exactly what happened that fateful night that changed his life forever. The very foundation of the Nine Circles, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’, is put to the test when the secrets of Alex’s past threaten his friends’ future. All the while his steadfast bodyguard, Katya Ivanova, is by his side. Her duty is to protect Alex from all danger including himself. In the end, they end up saving each other because they both needed to let go of the past in hopes of having a future worth living.

This installment in the series was leaps and bounds above the first. While the cast of characters is the same, they had more depth, personality, and realism. Jackie Ashenden gives her characters significant flaws but allows them to learn from their mistakes making them easy to relate to. Make you Mine is a great read for those looking for emotion, action, and romance.

Savage Chains

Savage Chains (Men in Chains, #1.5-1.7)Savage Chains by Caris Roane
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vampires seem to have a naturally dark aurora. Caris Roane has added a layer of depravity with this installment of the Men in Chains series. Reyes spent a century of his life as a sex slave and swore an oath to himself that he would do everything in his power to bring an end to the practice. He has spent decades working on his cover as a slaver hoping to get the attention of the Starlin group, a major organization of sex traffickers. Everything is going according to plan until Angelica enters to picture. They are both attracted to each other but Reyes rebuffs her attention in an effort to stay focused on his mission and to avoid the Starlin Group notices Angelica since she perfectly fits their ‘type’. Little does he know that it’s already too late and before either of them realizes what’s happening, Angelica is kidnapped and being sold as a sex slave.

Caris Roane has written two very likeable main characters and two heinous villains. Savage Chains is an in-between installment of the Men in Chains series. However, for readers who are new to the series, this is a standalone book.

Soul Scorched

Soul Scorched (Dark Kings, #6)Soul Scorched by Donna Grant
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Book six of the Dark Kings series begins with finding out more kings have awakened in preparation for the coming battle with Ulrik. This installment focuses on Warrick whom we met briefly in Night’s Blaze. He is sent to watch over Darcy, a Druid, who garnered the interest of the kings because she is the one who helped Ulrik get some of his magic back. What makes the whole situation complicated is that the Dark Fae are after her although we know that they are in league with Ulrik who still needs her to get more of his magic unbound. Warrick ends up having to protect Darcy from the Dark Fae and the Dragon Kings.

Donna Grant continues to build on the series. There are some big revelations in this installment but also more questions. The series is definitely building up to something huge; there is just no way of knowing exactly how it will unfold at this point. With an influx of new dragon kings the series could continue indefinitely which is a double-edged sword; readers want to see the coming battle but as with all series there is an attachment to the characters you don’t want to end.

The Closer You Come

The Closer You Come (The Original Heartbreakers, #1)The Closer You Come by Gena Showalter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jase, West, and Beck decided to ‘start over’ in Strawberry Valley, OK population 7,416. They figured it was far enough away from the city to get away from the demons of their past but yet close enough for a night out on the town when the occasion called for one. While all three are still dealing with the emotional distress of one terrible night, Jase also has to deal with the physical scars since he actually served time in prison for it.

Brook Lynn Dillon is barely surviving in a questionable state of contentment. She is on the hunt for her sister yet again when she meets Jase for the first time. The chemistry between her and Jase is palpable and wouldn’t luck have it, she finds her sister in his bed making him off limits. In spite of that initial awkward faux pas, they find that they cannot ignore the attraction between them.

Gena Showalter is a romantic genius. Once again she has created an entire community that is unbelievably real with strong characters readers will love. This has the makings of a great romance series and we she how the love lives of West and Beck will unfold.
