Taking it All

Taking it All (Surrender Trilogy, #3)Taking it All by Maya Banks
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I had a really hard time with this one. This was not a situation where ‘love conquers all’ comes into play. I don’t see any woman forgiving her husband for the situation Tate put Chessy in. She could have come to serious harm all because he stepped out for a second to try to reel in a client after promising to put her first. There are just some things in life that are unforgiveable; no factor that would shed a different light on the situation. I’m sorry to say part of it was Chessy’s fault for putting so much trust and faith into Tate after such an extended period of being last on his priority list.

The writing overall was on par. I just can’t get past the storyline and the fact that two to three weeks later everything was all good and they are going to live happily ever after. Taking it All was a very disappointing installment/finale for the series. If you have read the previous two book, you won’t really lose anything by not reading this one.

Secret Pleasure

Secret PleasureSecret Pleasure by Lora Leigh
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

From the moment Alyssa, Sebastian, and Shane met, their lives were changed forever. None of them could have ever predicted the pain, suffering, and death that would shadow and threaten them for almost ten years.
At eighteen when she met the cousins, Alyssa was filled with dreams of a life full of a husband’s love and lots of children. At twenty-six, she has lost the will to live and is drowning in despair from everything that has been taken from her. Someone is out to get her and she has no idea why or who it is. When Shane and Sebastian reappear in her life so does her nameless, faceless enemy who seems more determined than ever to destroy her.
Lora Leigh always delivers on steamy romance and love scenes but this time there was also a heavy element of suspense. There are some gaps in the plot and the book ends with readers finding out whom but not really understanding why. However, Secret Pleasure is a solid installment to The Bound Hearts series.

Return To Glebe PointReturn To Glebe Point by Patricia Paris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For fans of the Glebe Point series, this installment introduces us to another member of the Morrison family, Charlie, Justin and Blake’s cousin. Justin and Blake know that something happened to Charlie to bring her back other than a desire to return to their hometown. They just have no clue what it could be since they haven’t spoken to her in over three years. In spite of the mysterious circumstances surrounding her return, Blake and Justin do everything in their power to make her feel welcome and establish a life, even going so far as to getting her set up with her own cupcake shop.

Cooper can see Charlie’s baggage a mile away and desperately wants to continue his carefree, drama free life but something about her draws him like a moth to a flame. They get off to a rocky start but quickly agree that being ‘friends with benefits’ would be mutually beneficial. Slowly but surely, their little romance blossoms into a full blown love story for the ages neither of them were seeking but find they can’t live without.

Patricia Paris has once again delivered great characters with strength and resilience readers will be able to easily identify with.

This Time Forever (Glebe Point, #1)This Time Forever by Patricia Paris
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

On the best and worst day of his life, Blake finds out he has a son only no one knows where he is. He hires a private detective to try and find him but lead after lead turns into a dead end. When he meets Delaney he starts to feel that life isn’t completely unfair. Little does he know that his past and his present are on a collision course that will irrevocably change his future.

In an effort to protect someone you love, is it okay to deceive another? This is the predicament that is now Delaney’s life. She wanted to do what was best for Ben but ended up falling in love with his father which was not part of the plan. She only wanted to meet Blake to confirm his horribleness but things get really complicated when the private detective Blake hired unveils her secret before she has a chance to.

Patricia Paris has written a delightful cast of characters that have good times, bad times, and some real punches to the gut that will have readers holding back tears. This is a great read for those looking for a contemporary romance with a healthy dose of depth.

Those Red High Heels

Those Red High HeelsThose Red High Heels by Katherine May
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What started out as the worst day of Emma Walker’s life ended up being the catalyst for her happily ever after. If Emma hadn’t awoken to a dog with stomach issues followed by being late for work and subsequently getting fired, she probably never would have bought those to die for, killer, red heels during her retail therapy session.

Greyson Lyons is moving through life on auto-pilot; he works to take over the family business, he is even planning to marry a woman he barely likes as a person, for the greater good of the business. When a woman in red high heels gets into his car by mistake, his entire world tilts on its axis and he will never be the same.

Katherine May has created some of the best characters one could hope for. They experience love, lust, hurt, and disappointment in a very real way. She has written a quick read that still delivers on depth and emotion. There is a sort of magic behind the notion of love at first sight but with this story even the most adamant naysayers may actually start to believe it could exist.

Make You Mine

Make You Mine (Nine Circles, #2)Make You Mine by Jackie Ashenden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Nine Circles series from Jackie Ashenden. The plot picks up where the first book left off. The members of the Nine Circles are delving further into the mystery of the Lucky Seven Casino. This time Alex is front and center and we find out exactly what happened that fateful night that changed his life forever. The very foundation of the Nine Circles, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’, is put to the test when the secrets of Alex’s past threaten his friends’ future. All the while his steadfast bodyguard, Katya Ivanova, is by his side. Her duty is to protect Alex from all danger including himself. In the end, they end up saving each other because they both needed to let go of the past in hopes of having a future worth living.

This installment in the series was leaps and bounds above the first. While the cast of characters is the same, they had more depth, personality, and realism. Jackie Ashenden gives her characters significant flaws but allows them to learn from their mistakes making them easy to relate to. Make you Mine is a great read for those looking for emotion, action, and romance.

The Closer You Come

The Closer You Come (The Original Heartbreakers, #1)The Closer You Come by Gena Showalter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jase, West, and Beck decided to ‘start over’ in Strawberry Valley, OK population 7,416. They figured it was far enough away from the city to get away from the demons of their past but yet close enough for a night out on the town when the occasion called for one. While all three are still dealing with the emotional distress of one terrible night, Jase also has to deal with the physical scars since he actually served time in prison for it.

Brook Lynn Dillon is barely surviving in a questionable state of contentment. She is on the hunt for her sister yet again when she meets Jase for the first time. The chemistry between her and Jase is palpable and wouldn’t luck have it, she finds her sister in his bed making him off limits. In spite of that initial awkward faux pas, they find that they cannot ignore the attraction between them.

Gena Showalter is a romantic genius. Once again she has created an entire community that is unbelievably real with strong characters readers will love. This has the makings of a great romance series and we she how the love lives of West and Beck will unfold.
